Description of our Classes:
At French in Boston, we offer a wide range of both group and private classes from Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced levels to classes devoted to Conversation, French Literature, Grad School Exam Preparation and Professional Presentations. You choose the program that best fits your needs.

Beginner I&II
These two courses will give you a very strong foundation in French. We will venture in the three basic and most important aspects of the language. At first you will have a thorough introduction to all the sounds of the language. Being guided in how to pronounce correctly any word in French will help you break through the "wall of self-consciousness" that blocks so many students. Moreover, this knowledge will ensure that you have a good French accent when reading anything, from a menu in a restaurant to a sentence from your phrase-book.

The second aspect of this course consists in learning how to form a sentence in French. Grammar functions very much like the game of Lego: with a few "elements" organized in a certain order you can build any sentence. We will study together all the different elements that constitute a sentence in French. Knowing the "recipe" of the sentence-structure will allow you to express your own thoughts in French, freeing you from the "phrase-book" dependency.

Finally, we will learn a future tense and a past tense. Describing what you did, what you do and what you will do will give you the opportunity to get accustomed to thinking and speaking in French.

By the end of these two courses you will have acquired enough knowledge of the syntax and basic vocabulary to function with confidence in any "tourist situations." You will also be ready to go to the next level.

Intermediate I&II
This level represents the continuation of your journey toward fluency. The amount of time devoted to conversation increases, leading to your integrating in great depth all the information acquired in the beginner course. What was then knowledge will now turn into reflexes. Your realm of expression will also greatly expend through the study of three areas of the language.

First, vocabulary-wise, you will be taught many idiomatic expressions as well as most of the French irregular verbs. Then we will study five new tenses. They will help you express many nuances, thus bringing much more sophistication to your speech. Each tense will be studied in great details to insure that you understand and distinguish them clearly. By practicing all these tenses extensively inside the classroom, you will absorb them effortlessly.

Finally, we will enter one of the most confusing area within the French language, which is the correct choice of object pronouns and their different placements within the sentence-structure. Upon doing many exercises that follow a very gradual progression, you will end up mastering with ease the sound of sentences containing these pronouns. After completing the two intermediate level courses, your understanding of the language as well as your ability to speak it will have radically changed!

Advanced I&II
These advanced level courses will give you a great sense of comfort and confidence by ensuring that you have a profound knowledge of all the aspects of the French grammar. Many advanced students end up using only thirty percent of what they have studied because they have not yet integrated in depth all the notions to which they have been exposed.

Throughout these two courses the first priority will always be to help you assimilate all that you learned to the point where you naturally use the full extent of your knowledge, never feeling overwhelmed by the great amount of information held in your mind. The material involved in the advanced levels will include the remaining 8 spoken tenses as well as all the pronouns that were not covered in the preceding courses. In addition, a variety of other topics will be covered bringing completion to your knowledge of the French syntax.

At the end of these courses you will possess the means to express all your thoughts and emotions in French.

Conversation classes
These classes are targeted at students who have already a good grasp of French grammar .

The first objective of these courses is to provide an environment in which you will improve your fluency and increase your knowledge of idiomatic expressions and vocabulary all while discussing a wide range of current topics. These classes act like a "lab" where you can experiment and put into practice all the knowledge you have aquired in the preceding classes  They will help you reach a zone of comfort where speaking will graually become effortless, transforming your " grammatical tools" into reflexes of speech.

The other objective of these courses is more cultural and semantic. Upon reading a great variety of French texts the students will be exposed to French culture. Beyond merely expressing yourself using good French syntax, you will explore how the French themselves think and use all the possibilties of the French language to express their view of life.  You will become more acutely aware of the specific aspects that make the French culture.

Finally the conversation classes will also help improve your listening skills by watching French movies and listening to various audio material.
